Welcome To Leeds Psychotherapy

Depression is a common experience. It is often experienced in response to life events such as bereavement, divorce, loss of job. When we experience difficult life events it is easier to make sense of why we feel depressed, although this doesn’t make it easier to deal with. We can often become hard on ourselves for “not coping” or for “feeling sorry for myself.” This critical self talk is very common in depression and can be on-going without conscious awareness.

We can also feel depressed but not know why. A person can live their life in a state of depression without ever really acknowledging or accepting it as depression. People often put it down to life circumstances, feeling that "we don't deserve to be happy" or "that people don't care about us" or that "this is as good as it gets"

We often want to blame external influences for they way things have worked out for us.”

This type of depression is generally experienced as disappointment or joylessness and the origin of this can often be traced back to childhood experiences. What is often present in this exploration is that there were some aspects of growing-up that had been difficult to come to terms with and what has remained unresolved shapes the way we experience things now.

When people explore their depression they often realise that there is much more to it than just a reaction to circumstances. With increased awareness they begin to realise that it is as much to do with how they process their experiences, as the experiences themselves.

With depression there is usually a loss of energy which makes perfect sense if we look at depression as a way of coping. Depression, in a way, is a method of keeping our feelings under control whether it is anger, grief, fear etc. So instead of feeling these deeper, more difficult feelings we depress them and keep them away from our conscious awareness.

In effect, we are depressing our feelings and experience.

This offers a different, more understanding way of looking at depression. It also means that depression can be treated and overcome. Once we can identify what we are depressing and find ways of coping with our deeper feelings, in a healthier way, then our depression will lift.

Clinical depression is a deeper, more entrenched state and often pharmacological intervention is necessary for a person to feel more able to cope and face what is difficult. However the principle is the same so once a person can find new ways of dealing with their deeper emotions they can reduce their medication and start living in a more vibrant way.
